IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF THE ANCIENTS

April-November 1 night guided adventure

Chaco Culture National Historical Park, situated on the border of New Mexico and Arizona, is considered as one of the most significant ruins in North America. Somewhere between the years 900 and 1150, Chaco was a major focal point of culture for the Ancestral Puebloans. The layout of the dwellings attests to a relationship between the temporal with the eternal.

These masterpieces of ancient architecture were the largest building structures in North America until the nineteenth century.

Nine great houses are positioned along the north side of Chaco Wash that runs through the canyon, at the base of massive sandstone mesas. Other similar structures are found on mesa tops or in nearby washes.

Several trails along the bottom of the canyon and up to the top of the mesas offer a unique opportunity to hike through this ancient civilization’s sites, and to discover centuries old staircases and roads leading into the San Juan Basin along with regional examples of rock art.

This is a journey that offers visitors extraordinary teachings from the past and exciting hikes in the open expanses of this plateau and canyon and among the ancient buildings of the park.

Chaco Adventure

The adventure begins and ends in your choice of either Taos or Santa Fe. We follow the road to Abiquiú and through magnificent scenery and forests to arrive for a lunch break in Cuba. Our exploration of Chaco begins with Pueblo Bonito, the biggest and most important site in the canyon, and extends to other important ruins situated along the canyon floor for a comprehensive view of ancient Native American cultures. We will learn about the biodiversity present in this area and about the astrological alignments upon which the entire canyon was engineered.

We will spend the night at a nearby accommodation.  If camping is an option, we can reserve a campsite. Tents are not provided.

On the morning of our second day, we  explore a less visited pueblo ruin, the great house Tsin Kletzin that rises 450 ft above Casa Rinconada. From here, we will enjoy spectacular views over the whole surrounding area. The hike is a circular loop of approximately 2.6 miles. Other options are available.

Brown bag lunches are provided.

We will be back to our point of origin at the end of the afternoon.
